Gemma works in leisure full-time as a lifeguard, swimming teacher, and duty manager.

She first became involved with the RLSS UK in 2018 when she completed the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) through her local lifesaving club. Shortly after this, she qualified as a Rookie Lifeguard and Lifesaving Instructor.

Whilst at university, Gemma was a member of Southampton University Lifesaving Club. She now volunteers for them as a Lifesaving Instructor and Trainer Assessor for the NPLQ. She also enjoys volunteering at lifesaving competitions run by BULSCA (the British Universities Lifesaving Clubs’ Association).

In the summer months, Gemma volunteers for an independent beach rescue service as part of the shore crew.

Gemma is particularly passionate about teaching and learning in the field of water safety education, especially for young people with special educational needs and disabilities, a group who face an increased risk of drowning.
