About the Lifesaving Academy Assistant Instructor award

Lifesaving Academy Assistant Instructor is the award for lifesavers aged 14 and over to assist in delivering our National Lifesaving Academy and Rookie Lifeguard Pool programme.

Once Qualified, Lifesaving Academy Assistant Instructors can teach up to six lifesavers under the supervision of a Qualified Lifesaving Academy Instructor (and higher).


What are the prerequisites?

  • Be aged 14 or over
  • Hold a current Life Support 3 (can be taken as part of the award)
  • Hold RLSS UK Membership. It is the Instructor’s responsibility to maintain this membership.

Course content

The Lifesaving Academy Assistant Instructor award is approximately 8 hours in duration and requires both classroom and pool-based learning.

  • CPR & AED Standardisation
  • Teaching & Assessing
  • Writing Initiative Scenarios

Assessment

To achieve the Lifesaving Academy Assistant Instructor award, candidates must pass ongoing assessment during the course, as well as a probationary period that includes assisting a Lifesaving Academy Instructor (or higher) to deliver both wet and dry practical and theory skills from the National Lifesaving Academy or Rookie Lifeguard programmes.

Next Steps

Once you have gained your Lifesaving Academy Assistant Instructor award and a Bronze Medallion, you can be awarded your National Lifesaving Academy Distinction award!

At 16 you can become a Rookie Instructor or Lifesaving Academy Instructor, which will enable you to teach classes by yourself.

Don’t forget at 16 you can also become a Pool, Beach, or Open Water lifeguard
