The Coastal Waterways Module 1: Coastal Water Awareness module of the RLSS UK Water Safety Training - DEFRA Aligned training programme has been developed by RLSS UK and Bristol Maritime for responders who, as part of their job role, work in or near coastal waterways.

This award outlines the risks of operating close to coastal water and introduces essential safety measures. Candidates should complete either DEFRA Module 1 with Annex G or DEFRA Module 2 before completing this module. The course training provider must ensure candidates have suitable practical competencies before attending the Coastal Waterways Module.

About Coastal Waterways Module 1: Coastal Water Awareness

The Coastal Waterways Module 1: Coastal Water Awareness module equips responders who may work near coastal waters as part of their role with a solid understanding of the hazards associated with water. It outlines the risks of operating close to coastal water and introduces essential safety measures.

This is a non-regulated award.  



Prerequisites to complete a Coastal Waterways Module 1: Coastal Water Awareness

Candidates attending the Coastal Waterways Module 1: Coastal Water Awareness module must: 

  • Be 16 years old or over at the time of assessment.



Course Content for Coastal Waterways Module 1: Coastal Water Awareness

By the end of this module, candidates will be able to:

  • Recognise hazards associated with working near coastal water.
  • Be able to recognise typical characteristics and features associated with coastal waterways.
  • Have an appreciation for water quality and understand ‘the blue flag programme’.
  • Know the importance of a safe operation.
  • Know the importance of self-rescue from the water.
  • Have an awareness of the range and limitations of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Be aware of rescue safety in relation to search techniques and capabilities.
  • Have an appreciation for personal safety when responding to an emergency.

If you work in a different open water environment, you may need a different module or multiple RLSS UK Water Safety Training - DEFRA Aligned modules.



Coastal Waterways Module 1: Coastal Water Awareness Criteria

To achieve the Coastal Waterways Module 1: Coastal Water Awareness certificate, candidates must pass an ongoing assessment throughout the course, comprising verbal questioning. 



Renewal Process for Coastal Waterways Module 1: Coastal Water Certificate

The Coastal Waterways Module 1: Coastal Water Awareness certificate is valid for three years. To requalify, candidates should complete the course as a new candidate. 



Recognised Prior Learning (RPL)
 

Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) is not available for the Coastal Waterways Module 1: Coastal Water Awareness. All candidates must complete the full set of learning outcomes and assessment criteria.
