Take note before hopping into your Hot Tub! October saw us leap into action and launch our ‘Splash Safety at your Pad’ campaign in response to worrying findings around child drowning deaths which highlighted a need for more awareness around water safety at home. Running throughout the month of October, the campaign aimed to educate families about how to keep their children safe around water at home, emphasising the importance of always keeping young children within arm’s reach. Whilst the October campaign focused on bath time safety, RLSS UK is keen to urge parents and carers to also take note of our safety tips when hopping into your hot tub. Whether at home or on holiday, hot tubs are a great place for grown-ups to unwind and socialise – but they can be especially hazardous for children. In 2022-23, three children drowned in hot tubs after they were left uncovered. RLSS UK’s Hot Tub Safety Tips Cover it up Ensure hot tubs are covered with a solid, lockable cover immediately after use to prevent curious little froglets from climbing or falling in. Stay Together Ensure children are always supervised by an adult when they are spending time in and around a hot tub – even when the cover is on. Accidents can happen quickly, and children are naturally drawn to water. Not for Froglets! Children under five should not use a hot tub, so make sure yours is a froglet-free zone! Ribbit about the Risks Talk to older children about how to stay safe around hot tubs. Be clear children should stay away from hot tubs when not in use. Whilst lots of fun can be had with water in the home and your outdoor spaces, the ease of access to water in familiar spaces can sometimes make it easy to forget the risks water can bring. Splash Safety around Hot Tubs With our Splash Safety at Your Pad campaign, we want to ensure you know how to keep your little froglets safe while enjoying water around your home. The campaign will return in March 2025, using its family-friendly froggy theme to communicate our expert water safety advice. In spring, we will share more seasonal tips, particularly focusing on the use of paddling pools and water in your gardens and outdoor spaces, so please look out for the messaging and share the advice far and wide!
