Grantham Coates Surveys are data capture experts who use their skills and experience to support companies in various sectors. Often working on behalf of developers and consultants who represent large and small clients, they provide critical data for land, rail, river, and engineering projects, carrying out activities including river surveys, railway surveys, cross-section surveys, bridge surveys, topological surveys, laser scanning surveys, flood risk assessments and much more.

The company is a member of the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors and a full member of The Survey Association. It is based in the Midlands but works across the country. Due to the nature of its work, its team of surveyors often works in, on, or alongside water, which can be anything from a ditch to the River Thames.

Company founders John Grantham and Chris Coates, both surveying experts widely respected for their professionalism and attention to detail, made a conscious decision soon after setting up the business to ensure that the staff were well-versed in water safety and that water safety would be a fundamental part of their employee training programme. Attending courses delivered by Bristol Maritime, all existing employees have completed Training Module 1 - Water & Flood Awareness  DEFRA and Training Module 2 – Water & Flood First Responder, which are modules of the RLSS UK’s National Water Safety Management Programme DEFRA (NWSMP DEFRA). This training equips anyone working in, on or near water with essential knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about managing water safety. Co-founders John and Chris believe that this training provides their staff with the knowledge and skills to be fully prepared and allows them to practise scenarios they could find themselves in during work.

Regarding water safety training, Chris Coates said: “Our staff have many years of experience and knowledge of surveying, but very few people we employ had previously completed any form of water safety training. We consider water safety training paramount for our staff, as it empowers them to be aware of the potential dangers that exist upstream and downstream and plan and properly prepare so they can ensure that correct equipment is at hand, should it be required. We would encourage any company with staff who work near water to train their staff in water safety, as it is essential in their working life and for them to share with their families and friends so that everybody knows how to be safe near water.”

“In addition to water safety training, we share RLSS UK’s water safety messages during Drowning Prevention Week on our social media channels each year, as it is heartbreaking when you hear of tragic incidents on the news, and everyone should know how to be safe near water.”
